About

Why Khanta exists

Most bookkeeping apps were designed for a shelf full of packaged, barcoded goods. That's not really what a provision shop sells: loose grains, unbranded spices, oil poured from a jerry can, everything measured by scoop or cup or a practiced eye. That gap never really got addressed, just worked around, notebook after notebook.

Where we're headed

Eventually, something closer to a full business operating system for African informal retail. That's years away, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.

Where we are right now

Something narrower and more immediately useful: give a shop owner selling loose goods an accurate stock count and a working credit book, without making her type.

What we're proving

What we still have to prove

G1

Camera + voice beats manual entry

For loose, unpackaged goods specifically, the exact case the SKU-based tools out there weren't built for.

G2

Unit conversion owners can trust

Convert cartons to bags and derica, accurately enough for owners to trust the record.

G3

WhatsApp reminders from your shop's own number

Measurably better repayment than an owner chasing debtors herself, one phone call at a time.

G4

A usable catalog in under 5 minutes

From "never opened the app" to a shelf that's actually logged, the same day someone shows them how.

How we decided

Two questions we get asked a lot

Short, honest answers, the kind a technical due-diligence call or a skeptical shop owner actually asks first.

Decision 001

Open Khanta in your browser

Half the phones running Khanta don't have storage to spare for another install, and an app store page might not even load on a shaky connection. A link opens instantly. Add it to the home screen once and it behaves like a native app, with a full screen and no address bar. Same product, less friction.

Decision 002

A phone number, not an email and password

An email and a password is a solved problem for people who already use both every day. Most of the shop owners Khanta is built for don't; a phone number is what they already give out for WhatsApp, mobile money, their own customers. Asking for anything else would be asking them to create an account just to create an account.

A provision shop owner in Ikeja

~15m² shop, one or two staff, been running it for years
"The typing is too much, and it didn't understand how I sell things."

She's 35 to 50, runs the shop herself with a staff member or a family member helping out, and stocks the usual: rice, garri, beans, cooking oil decanted from jerry cans, sachet water, seasoning cubes, soap. She's not against technology; she's on WhatsApp all day; she just has no patience for an app that wants every item typed in by hand. She's tried one already. It didn't last a month.

A pattern from real conversations with shop owners, not one specific customer.
